For years, digital marketing was built around a relatively simple goal, to get users to click. SEO strategies were built around ranking highly enough on Google to drive traffic to your website but now that model is changing rapidly.
Welcome to the era of zero-click search, where users get the answers they need without ever clicking through to a website. And it’s not just Google driving this shift. AI-powered search such as ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Copilot, and platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Reddit are changing how people discover information entirely.
For brands, this represents one of the biggest marketing shifts since the rise of social media. The question is no longer “How do we rank first?” It’s now “How do we become the source that search engines and AI platforms trust enough to surface?”
Zero-click search happens when a user finds the answer they need directly within a platform without visiting another website. A user searching "What’s the best shampoo for fine hair?" for example, may now receive an AI-generated comparison or Reddit discussions and YouTube reviews all before they ever visit a brand’s website.
This means website traffic from traditional search is becoming less predictable, but the visibility still matters - arguably even more so!
Search engines are increasingly becoming “answer engines”. So rather than acting as directories that send traffic elsewhere, they now aim to keep users within their own ecosystems.
This shift is being driven by AI-powered search, social search behaviour (TikTok is used by younger generations as a search engine), trust in community content and search platform monetisation.
For marketers, this means impressions, citations, mentions, and authority signals are becoming just as important as traffic. Ultimately organic content is making a comeback (tbh we’ve never not prioritised it!)
Ironically, as AI-generated content floods the internet, authentic human expertise is becoming significantly more valuable. Search engines and AI models are increasingly trying to identify genuine expertise, trustworthy sources and original perspectives therefore generic SEO blogs, written purely to rank, are losing effectiveness. This aligns closely with Google’s emphasis on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)
Brands need content that demonstrates thought leadership from real experts, original research/data, named authors, specialist commentary and in multiple formats, including video, podcasts, interviews and webinars.
The brands winning organic visibility today are often the ones producing the most genuinely useful content, not the most content.
